Paulo Coelho's The Witch of Portobello

How do we fund the courage to be true to ourselves - even if we are unsure of who we are?

That is the central question posed by Paulo Coelho's riveting new work, The Witch of Portobello. It is the story of Athena, a mysterious young woman born in Romania, raised in Beirut and living in London. Her life is told by the many who knew her well - or hardly at all.

'She was my teacher, charged with passing on the sacred mysteries, with awakening the unknown energy we all possess'
Andrea McCain, actress

'Athenas greatest problem was that she was a woman of the twenty-second century living in the twenty-first, and making no secret of that fact either. Did she pay the price? She certainly did'
Deidre O'Neill, known as Edda

'No one places her dreams in the hands of those who might destroy them. No one, that is, but Athena'
Heron Ryan, journalist

Like The Alchemist, The Witch of Portobello is the kind of story that will transform the way readers think about love, passion, joy and sacrifice

this was an inspiring piece by a man who really knew how to reach out to us girls, who are growing up to be ladies. it really got me going, to embrace adventure as an everyday part of my life (:

Mary Higgins Clark's Where Are You Now?

It has been ten years since 21-year-old Kevin MacKenzie, Jr. ('Mac') went missing. A Columbia University senior, about to graduate and already enrolled in Duke University Law School, he walked out of his room and has never been seen again. However, he does ritually call his mother every year: on her birthday, on his birthday, and on Mother's Day. Each time, he assures her he is fine, refuses to answer her frantic questions, then hangs up. Even the death of his father, a corporate lawyer, on 9/11 does not bring him home, or break the pattern of his calls.

Mac's sister Carolyn, now 26, has endured two family tragedies - her brother's inexplicable disappearance and the loss of her father. Realizing that neither she nor her mother will ever be able to have closure and get on with their lives until they find her brother, she sets out to discover what happened to Mac, and why he has found it necessary to hide from them.

Her journey into the world of people who willingly disappear from their own lives leads her to learn about others who may or may not still be alive, and ultimately to a deadly confrontation with someone close to her who suddenly becomes an enemy - and cannot allow her to disclose his secret..

I've always been a huge fan of Mary Higgins Clark & she really outdid herself with this one. Give it a try, the ending was quite a twist! This book's a hard-cover too!

Megan McCafferty's Fourth Comings

Is the real world ready for Jessica Darling?

At first it seems she's living the New York City dream. She's subletting an apartment with her best friend, working for a magazine that actually cares about her psychology degree, and still deeply in love with the charismatic Marcus Flutie.

But reality is more complicated than dreamy cliches.

When Marcus proposes - giving her only one week to answer - Jessica must decide if she's ready to give up a world of late-night literacy soirees, art openings, and downturn drunken karaoke to move back to New Jersey and be with the one man who's gripped her heart for years. Jessica ponders this and other life choices with her signature snark and hyper-intense insight, making it the most tumultuous and memorable week of her twenty-something life.

This one hit my personal life right at the core & i'm pretty sure you'll find it doing the same for you too!

Harlan Coben's The Innocent
SOLD!

One slip was all it took to rob Matt Hunter of the life he had so well mapped out. A fight, a friend in trouble, a slippery pavement and the dull crack of someone's skull on the concrete cost him four years in jail and a small sliver of his soul.

Emerging an older and wiser person, Matt swears not to waste any more of the time he has allotted to him. Determination and pride get him a job to be proud of and a beautiful girl to agree to marry him. The break in the road seems o have only made him a stronger person.

However, when he receives a strange video message on his mobile phone and realises that a very bad man is following him, his new existence is suddenly under threat. Why is this ex-con on his tail, and who really is this woman he has married? Suddenly Matt can't trust anybody-least of all those he loves..

An electrifying thrill-ride of a novel that peeks behind the white picket fences of suburbia, The Innocent is at once a twisting, turning, emotionally-charged story, and a compelling tale of the choices we make and repercussions that never leave us.

this was an amazing read (: i loved it and didn't want to put it down even for a second !

Catherine Lim's The Song of Silver Frond
PENDING!

One morning in Singapore more than fifty years ago, The Venerable One - a wealthy, respected handsome Chinese patriarch, head of a large household of three wives and many children and grandchildren - takes a walk by a cemetery. There, a young village egg-seller, Silver Frond, is amusing herself with a comic sing-and-dance act based on popular gossip - about him. The meeting instantly changes their lives.

Is he not too old? Is she not too young? Are their worlds not too far apart? With characteristic verve and wit, Catherine Lim traces the struggles of an unusual couple through the jungle of human quandaries and predicaments created by the force of tradition, and celebrates the ultimate triumph of an even more extraordinary force - love.

Needless to say, this book spoke to me and taught me the greatness of Love (: for anyone who is in love and yearns to be in love (:

Jonathan Trigell's Boy A
SOLD!

A is for Apple. A Bad Apple.

Jack has spent most of his life in juvenile institutions: he's about to be released with a new name, new job and a new life. At 24, he is utterly innocent of the world, yet guilty of a monstrous childhood crime.

To his new friends, he is a good guy with occasional flashes of unexplained violence. To his girlfriend, he is strangely naive and unreachable. To his case worker, he's a victim of the system and of media-driven hysteria.

And to himself, Jack is on permanent trial: he struggles to start from scratch, forget the past, become someone else.

A searing and heartfelt novel, Boy A won the John Llewellyn Rhys Prize (2005) and the Waverton Good Read Award (2004)

they've adapted this book into a movie, i believe (: but nothing's better than reading it yourself. i was most mesmerized by Jack and how he interacted with others. maybe it's your turn to read it (:
